What NFPA 80 actually requires

NFPA 80 is the standard for fire doors and other opening protectives. Falling behind on it is one of the most commonly cited deficiencies in commercial buildings.

NFPA 80

Annual inspection required

Every fire door assembly must be inspected and tested at least annually, with written records kept for inspection by the AHJ.

NFPA 101

Life Safety Code

Egress doors in rated barriers must operate freely and latch positively — a key finding in most survey citations.

Joint Commission

Healthcare readiness

EC.02.03.05 requires documented fire door inspection and testing for hospitals and care facilities.

The 13-point inspection

Each assembly is checked against the NFPA 80 criteria before it can be certified.

  1. 01No open holes or breaks in door or frame
  2. 02Glazing, vision light frames and stops intact
  3. 03Door, frame, hinges, hardware and noncombustible threshold secure
  4. 04No missing or broken parts
  5. 05Clearances within allowable tolerances
  6. 06Self-closing device operational — door closes fully
  7. 07Coordinator functions correctly on pairs
  8. 08Latching hardware operates and secures the door
  9. 09No auxiliary hardware interfering with operation
  10. 10No field modifications voiding the label
  11. 11Gasketing and edge seals inspected and intact
  12. 12Signage does not violate label requirements
  13. 13Labels legible and properly affixed
